Luke 2:1-20, tr. William Tyndale, 1530

Luke 2:1-20, tr. Miles Coverdale, 1535

It fortuned at the same tyme, that there wete out a comaundement fro Augustus the Emperoure, that the whole worlde shulde be taxed. And this taxynge was the first that was executed, whan Syrenius was leftenaunt in Siria. And they wente all, euery one to his owne cite to be taxed. Then Ioseph gat him vp also fro Galile, out of the cite of Nazareth, in to Iewry, to ye cite of Dauid, which is called Bethleem, (because he was of ye house and lynage of Dauid) that he might be taxed wt Mary his spoused wife, which was wt childe. And it fortuned whyle they were there, ye tyme was come, that she shulde be delyuered. And she brought forth hir first begotte sonne, & wrapped him in swadlinge clothes, and layed him in a maunger: for they had els no rowme in the ynne.

And there were in ye same region shepherdes in the felde by the foldes, and watchinge their flocke by night. And beholde, ye angell of the Lorde stode by the, and ye brightnes of the Lorde shone rounde aboute them, and they were sore afrayed. And the angell sayde vnto them: Be not afrayed. Beholde, I brynge you tydiges of greate ioye, which shall happen vnto all people: for vnto you this daye is borne ye Sauioure, eue Christ ye Lorde, in the cite of Dauid. And take this for a token: Ye shal fynde the babe swadled, and layed in a maunger. And straight waye there was by the angell a multitude of heauenly hoostes, which praysed God, and sayde: Glory be vnto God an hye, & peace vpon earth, and vnto men a good wyll.

And it fortuned wha the angels were gone from the in to heaue, the shepherdes sayde one to another: let vs go now euen vnto Bethleem, and se this thinge that is happened, which ye Lorde hath shewed vnto vs. And they came wt haist, & founde both Mary and Ioseph, & the babe layed in ye maunger. And whan they had sene it, they published abrode the sayenge, yt was tolde the of this childe. And all they that herde it, wondred at the wordes, which the shepherdes had tolde them. But Mary kepte all these sayenges, and pondred them in hir hert. And the shepherdes returned, praysinge and laudinge God, for all that they had herde and sene, euen as it was tolde them.

Luke 2:1-14, King James Version, 1611

And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be taxed. (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.

And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem (because he was of the house and lineage of David), to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, she being great with child.

And so it was that while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered; and she brought forth her first-born son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes; and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.

And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them, and they were sore afraid.

And the angel said unto them, Fear not; for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day, in the city of David, a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you: That ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, and lying in a manger.

And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Vulgate: Luke 2:1-14

Luke 2:1-14 in Swedish, trans. 2000

“Ära i höjden åt Gud

Luke 2:1-14 in Swedish, trans. 1917

4 En Jozef ging ook op van Galilea, uit de stad Nazareth, naar Judea, tot de stad Davids, die Bethlehem genaamd wordt, (omdat hij uit het huis en geslacht van David was);
10 En de engel zeide tot hen: Vreest niet, want, ziet, ik verkondig u grote blijdschap, die al den volke wezen zal;

Luke 2:1-14 in Portuguese:

:: 2. Premye travay sa a te fèt nan tan Kireniyis t’ap kòmande nan peyi yo rele Siri a. :: 3. :: 4. Jozèf te rete nan peyi Galile, nan yon bouk yo rele Nazarèt. Men, paske li te moun nan fanmi ak ras David, li moute, li ale nan Jide, nan lavil David yo rele Betleyèm lan. :: 5. Jozèf tapral fè yo pran non l’ ansanm ak non Mari, fiyanse li, ki te ansent. :: 6. Antan yo te la, jou pou Mari te akouche a rive. :: 7. Li fè premye pitit li a, yon ti gason. Mari vlope pitit la nan kouchèt, li mete l’ kouche nan yon kay kote yo bay bèt manje, paske pa t’ gen plas pou yo nan lotèl la. :: 8. :: 9. Lè sa a, yon zanj Bondye parèt devan yo, bèl limyè Bondye a klere tout kote yo te ye a. Yo te pè anpil. :: 10. Men zanj lan di yo konsa: Pa pè. N’ap anonse nou yon bon nouvèl ki pral fè tout pèp la kontan anpil. :: 11. :: 12. Men remak ki va fè nou rekonèt li: n’a jwenn yon tibebe vlope nan kouchèt, kouche nan yon kay kote yo bay bèt manje. :: 13. Menm lè a, yon foul lòt zanj nan syèl la vin jwenn zanj lan; yo t’ap fè lwanj Bondye, yo t’ap di konsa: :: 14. Lwanj pou Bondye anwo nan syèl la, kè poze sou latè pou tout moun li renmen.

Lúkasar guðspjall 2:1-20 in Icelandic:

Merry Christmas!

We've finally reached the stage where the teenagers are asking us not to get them up too early on Christmas morning. So I got to stay in bed till 10:30. I wrenched my shoulder falling down the stairs last night, but I still managed to reposition and go back to sleep every time the pain woke me.

I have many gifts with which I am delighted, sentimental chocolate, the ingredients for eggnog, the prospect of D&D and good food to come, and (best of all) so many people online and off who make me happy.

May everyone reading this have the equivalent.

Merry Christmas, one and all!

Here's Luke 2:1-14 in Hiligaynon (Ilonggo), spoken in the town where I was born and lived before I sailed to sea.

Lucas 2:1-14

5 Gindala ni Jose si Maria nga iya palangasaw-on agod magpalista man.

Locally, pancakes made and et, breakfast dishes washed, presents open, turkey going in the oven. With no small children in the house, we don't rush any more. And the rain has let up after the violent thunderstorms yesterday, although it's still far too warm for Christmas in the Northern Hemisphere.

Happy Christmas to all!

We're winding down after a really low-key holiday. The timing on all the cooking got away from us, and we decided to let it: the Christmas Eve bacalhoada became lunch on Christmas day. The experimental home-brined ham for Christmas lunch became Christmas supper. The mince pies got done in two small batches on two days, which was just about right. And Christmas Eve supper, perforce, became take-out Chinese food, filling out the Jewish side of the traditions. There are still gifts under the tree that didn't get unwrapped (still 11 days to go, after all), and everyone seems happy with that.

Teresa@0: Thank you. I also realized last night that I was looking forward to this post.

abi@7: I'm sorry to hear about the injury, but glad for all the delights.

I was wondering whether I was going to faint at late service, but it turned out the lights actually were flickering, probably from running the AC in a weird regime, trying to keep everyone from fainting.

By this point my internal clock was completely wrecked so that something like brunch was in the afternoon and dinner was at 10. It was a lovely bit of toploin roast, which I'd never done before but was a special at the Safeway, and of course The Soup. I also had leftover lox for brunch from what I made for the family Christmas Eve thing: everyone made a ton of food and hardly ate, so instead of one piece cut each day, I have more than half of what I made uncut.

Low-key day here. My partner's daughter has a Christmas birthday, and he baked chocolate orange brownies to take to her party. They were excellent. We saw a couple of her friends who we haven't seen in a long time, which was nice.

Sang at an evening Mass Christmas Eve, slept late on Christmas day, went to dinner at friends' place, so my planned roast beef and Yorkshire pudding will be today. Hope you recover quickly, Abi.

My "Jewish Christmas" was broken up over the surrounding days: Chinese buffet for Christmas Eve, last night I made box mac&cheese with my usual bowl of veggies fried in the butter. (Unfortunately my Mom was sick and didn't gather a group for Chinese outing this year.) I'll hopefully be seeing SW:TFA this Sunday with friends.

A somewhat startling sight before Christmas Eve; one of my neighbor families had a huge pot cooking on their front walk, perched over a portable gas burner (fed from one of those refillable natural-gas tanks). Upon inquiry, the wife said it contained "a sheep".

Quiet but fun Christmas. Frozen truffle mac and cheese for lunch, which actually seems vaguely celebratory. Dinner was medallions of NY strip steak cooked sous vide with my new wand, yorkshire pudding, and the usual homemade apple chutney, washed down with hard cider aged in a rum barrel.

This all coming off a mountain of activity over the previous month, as I got involved this year in starting up a community singing group, whose first project was caroling throughout December. Also much baking for all the usual suspects and events.

Pleasant Christmas here. Continued my dog-walking job, saw The Movie again, and went to a party where Chinese food was among the offerings. Hope everyone else's was equally happy.

Mele Kalikimaka to all a day late. Small Christmas gift-giving this year for various reasons. Giant roast beast, Yorkshire, garlic mashed and spinach to make up for it.

Little left o' the latter.

OK, so today (in Maryland, not Santa Barbara) I had lunch on the deck at the restaurant where my daughter works. Just because. The flowering shrubs all think it's somewhere around March 15th.

C. Wingate #37: Yeah, down here in Virginia we had nearly a shirtsleeve Christmas (except for the rain). Even down here, that ain't normal!

Warm in Westchester County. Like early autumn. I walked with my sister and her kids near the Hudson; I had just a dress shirt on.

Just determined that a certain gift item can't legally fly home with me; a vial of some perfumey stinkum, part of a fragance-dispersing ornamental gadget. Which I honestly don't see myself, well, using. This is why I buy friends and relatives things like flash lights and first aid kits. [/Christmas Grump]

I'd planned to cook way too many things for the two of us for Christmas, but friends organized a dim sum run, so we did that for lunch (and had coffee for breakfast without making the frozen red bean pastries, which we had Saturday when I was unexpectedly on the phone for work all day*.) Yams and potatoes and homemade cranberry sauce and baked pears and fake-turkey for dinner.

*I'm supposedly on vacation, but the people trying to get the things installed by the end of the year were in a rush and shipped everything to the field from the factory instead of configuring it all first which would have been easy, and I logged in Thursday morning to check my mail and got IM'd. So Thursday and Saturday and probably tomorrow were talking people through setting up hardware that wasn't being extremely cooperative. But at least I was working in the daytime; we had people from India, Amsterdam, Slovakia, Eastern US, and Western US all on various parts of our calls.

Belatedly, happy festive season to all. Stupidly warm here in London, with some rain but thankfully not the torrents that have been causing severe and dangerous floods further north, particularly in Cumbria. Hope everyone is safe and comfortable.

Two parkruns organised successfully (one on Christmas Day, with mince pies and mulled wince/mulled red grape juice as well as the usual Saturday run) and a good time had by all. Flapjacks and spiced apple juice to prepare for the one on New Year's Day.

Pleasant time with (my husband's) family, and we managed to visit some of my family on the previous weekend.

David Harmon @42: Love that decoration - and it's nicely in keeping with the Boutique Academia link (see TNH's Particles).

Happy holidays!

I am back online after a spectacular Windows 10 failure, and have had my computer rolled back to Windows 7. Now comes the fun of reloading a cubic buttload of stuff.

I am seriously looking into cloud storage for all my music, and probably with Amazon as Apple's customer assistance sucks.

Here's to a better New Year for all!

One of the things I have done over Christmas is get my computer set to dual boot, Windows and Linux, from the hard drive, rather than booting from a USB drive.

The actual dual-boot setup was pretty easy, and all my Windows drive space is automagically available. There was some fiddling with getting Linux programs installed again.

1: The Kindle reader for a PC installs using Wine.

2: While it took a bit of trial and error to get the right names. I also got my NAS drive (windows compatible) auto-mounting under Linux. There are several details you need. such as the username and password for the drive. You don't need to restart the system, but...

This is for Ubuntu, and does assume the shared drive is on another Windows machine

As for the mount function:

sudo mount -a

All this is relatively easy to find with Google, but somewhat bewildering because of the Unix geeks pouncing on newbies who ask "too-easy" questions, and the very old answers that still lurk on Google. If you're explaining the setup to mount the drive, it seems that you are forbidden from actually quoting the command to mount it.

(I do a bit of newbie-helping in another venue, and it's easy to assume the newbie knows stuff that used to be commonplace in the PC world of a decade ago.)

((And anyone that says Linux doesn't need rebooting from time-to-time is maybe over-optimistic, but it is better than Windows.))

We were gifted with having the eldest sprog spend a few weeks back with us (he has been living with grandmama for a little over a year so he can learn to deal with a different living environment)

For a wonder, he and his brother did not *immediately* devolve to "he's looking at my food!" mode.

We put him back on the plane to the wilds of Minnesota this morning at 5:00 AM (well, we left the house for the airport at 5:00 AM)

#52 ::: dotless ı ::: (view all by) ::: January 06, 2016, 10:09 AM:

Is it still ok to post here on Epiphany? We take the most expansive definition of Christmastide we can in this house.

Rikibeth@35: I blame Linus Van Pelt.

Likewise. As a child I found that whole segment incomprehensible but affecting. We just showed A Charlie Brown Christmas to the four-year-old for the first time, and I'm not quite sure how any of it was received, but the music sent me straight back to childhood.

Speaking of music, this is the first year the child really latched onto any carols. The favorite (measured in "what the child most often wakes up singing") seems to be Gaudete, and we're fine with that. (Amazing Spouse corrects me: we're overjoyed with that!) The Coventry Carol is a close second.
