Sorbian (from http://www.sorbischer-evangelischer-verein.de/j2009/Lektionar.pdf
, look for 1. dźeń hodow )

W tym času pak so sta, zo wuńdźe přikaznja wot kejžora Awgustusa,
zo by wšitkón swět zapisany był. 2 A tuto zapisanje bě najprěńše a sta
so w času, jako běše Quirinius bohot w Syriskej. 3 A wšitcy dźěchu, zo
bychu so dali zapisać, kóždy do swojeho města. 4 Tuž poda so tež 29
Jozef z Galilejskeje, z města Nacareta, do židowskeho kraja
k Dawidowemu městu, kotremuž rěkaju Betlehem, dokelž běše z doma
a roda Dawidoweho, 5 zo by so zapisać dał z Marju, swojej slubjenej,
kotraž běše z ćežkim žiwotom.
6 A jako tam běštaj, dóńdźe čas, zo dyrbješe porodźić, 7 a wona
porodźi swojeho prěnjeho syna a zawi jeho do pjeluškow a połoži jeho
do žłoba, přetož njemějachu hewak žaneho městna w hospodźe.
8 A pastyrjo běchu w samsnej krajinje na polu a stražowachu w nocy
swoje stadło. 9 A jandźel Knjeza přistupi k nim, a jasnosć Knjeza jich
wobswěći; a woni so jara bojachu. 10 A jandźel praji jim: „Njebojće so!
Hlej, připowědam wam wulke wjesele, kotrež so wšemu ludej dóstanje,
11 přetož wam je so dźens Zbóžnik narodźił, kotryž je Chrystus, Knjez,
w Dawidowym měsće. 12 A tole mějće za znamjo: Dźěćatko namakaće
do pjeluškow wite a w žłobje ležo.“ 13 A hnydom bě pola jandźela syła
njebjeskeho wójska, kotřiž chwalachu Boha a prajachu: 14 „Česć budź
Bohu we wysokosći a měr na zemi pola čłowjekow jeho spodobanja.“
15 Jako jandźeljo wot nich do njebjes stupachu, rěčachu pastyrjo mjez
sobu: „Pójmy nětk do Betlehema a wobhladajmy sej wěc, kotraž je so
stała a kotruž je nam Knjez zjewił.“ 16 A přińdźechu chwatajcy a namakachu
wobeju, Marju a Jozefa, a tež dźěćatko w žłobje ležo.
17 Jako pak běchu jo widźeli, roznošowachu słowo, kotrež bě so jim wo
dźěsću prajiło. 18 A wšitcy, kotřiž jo słyšachu, dźiwachu so temu, štož
běchu jim pastyrjo prajili. 19 Marja pak zachowa wšitke słowa a rozpominaše
je w swojej wutrobje. 20 A pastyrjo so zaso wróćichu,
česćachu a chwalachu Boha za wšitko, štož běchu słyšeli a widźeli,
kaž běše so jim prajiło.

Czech (kralická, 1613) from http://www.etf.cuni.cz/~rovnanim/bible/k/Lk2.php
3. I šli všickni, aby zapsáni byli, jeden každý do svého města.
5. Aby zapsán byl s Marií, zasnoubenou sobě manželkou těhotnou.
6. I stalo se, když tam byli, naplnili se dnové, aby porodila.
7. I porodila Syna svého provorozeného, a plénkami ho obvinula, a položila jej v jeslech, proto že neměli místa v hospodě.
8. A pastýři byli v krajině té, ponocujíce, a stráž noční držíce nad svým stádem.
13. A hned s andělem zjevilo se množství rytířstva nebeského, chválících Boha a řkoucích:
14. Sláva na výsostech Bohu, a na zemi pokoj, lidem dobrá vůle.
16. I přišli, chvátajíce, a nalezli Marii a Jozefa, i to nemluvňátko ležící v jeslech.
17. A viděvše, rozhlašovali, což jim povědíno bylo o tom děťátku.

We've been enjoying this year's nice interlocking of two: latkes, sufganyot, gingerbread, and mincemeat all in close proximity. (Also, for various reasons, less travel for me than on any December in the past 30 years, which has made many things more relaxing.)

2014, especially the last half of it, was a pretty tough year in the circles I run in. Nevertheless, I am deeply grateful for the love and kindness of so many dear people. Family (blood and chosen), friendship, and the compassion of strangers gets us through. For those who were battered in 2014, may 2015 fall more lightly. May we all find peace where we can. Blessings, laughter, and joy be yours.

We're interrupting Christmas morning activities to join some friends in Jewish holiday tradition, i.e. going out for Chinese food on Christmas. (In this case, dim sum brunch rather than dinner.) The cats have not yet discovered the catnip mice in their stocking, so the presents are intact, and the clatter that arose in the middle of the night appears to have been them knocking other things over (rather than Santa Claus.)

I'm always interested in the progression from Tyndale to Coverdale to the KJV. Except for the spelling, they are very similar. IIRC, Tyndale was burned at the stake for translating the scriptures into English. A mere century later, his work formed the basis for the authorized English translation.

I also note that the spelling is suddenly much more familiar in the KJV. I'm guessing that the publication amd widespread acceptance of that Bible helped to standardize spelling.
