from 1010 WINS (www.wins.com)

Oct 16, 2003 3:37 pm US/Eastern
(1010 WINS) (NEW YORK) A broken water main flooded portions of Washington Heights and officials closed the lower level of the George Washington Bridge on Thursday afternoon.

The water main broke at 1:19 p.m. near Amsterdam Avenue and 178th Street, near the entrance to the bridge.

Several feet of water cascaded down Amsterdam, flooding businesses and apartments.

Fire Department spokesman Mike Loughran said there were no immediate reports of injuries. He said five buildings were evacuated.
