Housekeeping: bug in MSIE6 If you're using Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 for Windows, you may be experiencing a bug that keeps everything past your first screen's worth of my weblog from being displayed.

Patrick tells me the standard user workaround is to hit F11 twice to get the page to load, so try that first. But as Sander write to says:

[T]he page renders weirdly in my IE6 on WinXP. All the source is downloaded, but only the first "frame-height" (?) will load in the window, and then the rest will load after I press F5.
Hitting F5 once instead of F11 twice to make the page load is either an improved general-use workaround, or Sander has beaten the odds. It's good either way.

This display problem is a known bug in MSIE6; i.e., Microsoft already knows about it. Among other things, the bug's affecting a lot of weblogs that were built on the default Movable Type templates. Microsoft has been saying they're going to fix the it Real Soon Now. The sooner the better, sez I. Posted by Teresa Nielsen Hayden at July 25, 2002 12:59 PM

Another workaround, but I don't know what it does to other browsers, is to remove the DTD declaration at the very beginning of your index template. I did this and haven't gotten any complaints, but that doesn't mean much. There are also a bunch of different DTDs to try at a site referenced in the MT blog, by a guy talking about how to make web sites more accessible to the handicapped (incl. color-blind).

It works for me in MSIE 6 under Windows 2000 on my IBM Thinkpad laptop. FWIW.

I have had this problem repeatedly. Each solution seems to work for a while and then the problem comes back. Hopefully, MSFT will fix their browsers someday.
Changing the DOCTYPE declaration is tricky and might cause problems with other browsers if you do it wrong. (Do not ask me what wrong means; I have no idea.) In the mean time, the fix I am currently using, and which works so far is this: Add

(div style="clear:both;")© 2002 Steven Gallaher.(/div)

to the end of your index template just before the (/body). (Replace the ('s with 's. When I use the blog, view source, and scroll down to the bottom.
Good luck.

A refresh icon single mouse click - which the mouse alternate for F5 - works for me - WINXP - IE6 on a Dell C810 - almost anything that forces a redraw will work at least sometimes - changing font size which I do a lot works at least sometimes. I suppose there is a Knowledge Base article(s) about it, any references?

I fixed this on the default Movable Type template by setting the float for my side bar (it was missing a float in the style sheet). Don't know how it worked, but it did.
