How it went:

Everyone said it was the best funeral they'd ever attended. It was reasonably brisk (just under an hour), heartfelt, and full of narrative interest (that was my mother, doing Granny's life history), with a few pithy reflections (that was Uncle Will), and a lot of good music (hymn-singing in four-part harmony, plus a wonderful solo by my cousin Joe Leavitt).

When it was done, everyone felt cheerful and inspired, and after we'd accompanied the casket on the short trip to Mesa Cemetery, we all repaired to the ward cultural hall for lunch (potato salad, jello, and some darned good barbecue).

In short, it was exactly the sort of occasion Granny would have approved of and enjoyed.

I did some serious crying at several points, but the closest I came to losing it was when I was laughing so hard I nearly tumbled out of my pew. That was when Mom was talking about how she'd recently had to tear out a section of some kitchen cabinets Granny had built. She paused, groping for words, said "You wouldn't believe what it took to get those out," paused even longer, and said, almost helplessly, "All those twenty-penny nails!"

Granny would have liked the shipping case I built for Patrick's old guitar. She would also have approved of the way I mounted that little cabinet on the wall of my previous kitchen. I didn't understand how thoroughly I'd inherited her over-engineering tendencies until I discovered that describing my building projects to my maternal relations infallibly made them laugh.

Well, maybe we do over-engineer things! But they don't fall down.
